How MPPT charge controller sizing works

An MPPT (maximum power point tracking) controller converts the raw power from your solar array into charging current for your battery at the system voltage. Sizing a solar charge controller comes down to two independent checks: required output current into the battery, and whether array voltage fits inside the controller's operating input window.

Formulas

The sizing math

Exact electrical conversions and physical temperature corrections.

Step 1 — Output Current

I_out = P_array ÷ V_system

400 W on 12 V = 33.33 A continuous charging requirement. Pick a controller rated for at least this output.

Step 2 — Cold-Temperature Voc

Voc_cold = Voc × (1 + β/100 × (T_min − 25))

Voltage increases as temperature drops. Must stay strictly below controller max PV input rating.
